Mini Chupu”

Haha~ Sorry for the belated episode on exploring Peranakan culture. This episode will give you a better understanding of Baba Nyonya "Mini Chupu" ceramics.

This episode will discuss something different from previous. Why is it different? I'll talk about the Chupu ceramic that the Helper used to put in cooked "bird's nest" or what we now call "sweet soup," not the Kamcheng you might be thinking of! Kamcheng is for longan tea, not bird's nest. So, the Baba have a talent for design; different ceramics have different uses. That's why they would specially go to Jingdezhen, Guangzhou, China to order a batch of ceramics, including what's called "Chupu." There are also Mini Chupu, which are usually seen in the boudoirs of Nyonya room, because they were used to store Kerongsang (a type of savory jelly) or rouge. Actually, they can also be used to store bird's nest. Why put bird's nest in them? Because they have lids and handles, making it easy to lift the lid, and the pastel colors on the ceramics look very elegant and appetizing!

The design of a "Chupu" typically features a phoenix and peony, with two phoenixes on the top and bottom of the lid, and one peony on each side. It's often paired with the Eight Treasures or Eight Auspicious Symbols, frequently combined with lotus flowers to form a lotus-shaped arrangement supporting the Eight Treasures. The Eight Treasures are: conch shell, Dharma wheel, parasol, white canopy, lotus flower, treasure vase, goldfish, and endless knot, also abbreviated as wheel, conch, parasol, umbrella, flower, vase, fish, and knot. Some manufacturers also offer "Chupu" designs with different colors such as brown, turquoise, pink, sky blue, and yellow. However, Mini Chupu is usually made with peony flowers because it's only 9cm in size. Therefore, phoenixes are not depicted because the area is small or insufficient.

After seeing my photos and explanations, I believe you should know how to distinguish them now~ Haha~ Let's keep going! If you want to learn more about Baba Nyonya culture...
