Haha~ Sorry for the late tenth episode of How to Explore Nyonya Culture. This episode will give you a better understanding of Baba Nyonya "white background with pink" ceramics.
在这些白底粉彩陶瓷比较便宜过有彩色陶瓷如:土耳其绿色,粉红,黄色,olive green等~White-base porcelain is a common item in Baba-Nyonya households. It's easy to find and see, and is often used by Peranakan families to serve rice and other dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Baba-Nyonya families often use white-base porcelain to entertain guests and business partners during long-table banquets. They also discuss marriages during the banquet itself. While white-base porcelain is relatively inexpensive, there are also colored porcelains like turquoise, pink, yellow, and olive green.
Besides being used to hold rice and dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, white-based porcelain also served another purpose: at long banquets at Baba and Nyonya weddings. I believe Baba and Nyonya families back then would have crafted at least ten sets of plates, bowls, and spoons of varying sizes. The difference this time was that I discovered the largest plates were 24cm. Each of these plates featured a phoenix and peony flowers, while the smallest, 3-inch plate, lacked the phoenix and only featured peonies.
真的要珍惜 😊I believe that in the past, there wouldn’t be many 24cm plates in a set, so it’s very rare to see one in the market now. You’ll only have a chance to see one if it’s left behind by an old collector or a Nyonya family. You really have to cherish it 😊
